A NEW HORROR: The 1970’s Reinvented Fear

This October, Film Club returns to the decade that changed horror forever. Throughout the 1970s, filmmakers pushed fear out of gothic castles and into homes, highways, cities, and the American landscape—replacing old monsters with violence, paranoia, isolation, and the unsettling possibility that nowhere was truly safe.

Across these films, horror becomes rawer, stranger, and more immediate. Familiar rules disappear as filmmakers reinvent what the genre can show, where evil can live, and just how close terror can come.

The old monsters are gone. Something much worse has taken their place.
